Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about boudoir photography... for clients considering a session, and for photographers looking to get listed.

For Clients

Yes. Boudoir is for every woman... every body, every age, every life stage. The only requirement is that you want to do it. You do not need to be a certain size, a certain age, or in a certain relationship. Every photographer on this directory has photographed women across the full spectrum of life and body type, and the results speak for themselves.
Boudoir photography typically ranges from $300 to $3,000+ depending on the studio, location, and what is included. Most full-service studios have a session fee of $200-$500 that covers professional hair and makeup, studio access, and posing direction. The majority of clients invest $800-$2,000 when you include their image collection or album. Ask each studio for their full pricing guide before booking.
Any size. Full stop. Experienced boudoir photographers adjust their posing, lighting, and direction based on the individual in front of them... not based on a size requirement. Every studio on The Boudoir Directory works with women of all sizes. Many have client closets specifically stocked in sizes XS through 5XL or 6XL so every woman has access to something beautiful on session day.
No. Many women do boudoir sessions entirely for themselves. A session as a gift for a partner is common, but so is booking it for your birthday, after a divorce, after a health journey, after having a baby, or for no reason other than because you've wanted to do it. You do not need an occasion or a partner.
This varies significantly by studio. Full-service studios typically include professional hair and makeup, a curated client closet (often 200-400+ pieces in all sizes), posing direction throughout the session, and an in-person image reveal appointment. Some include a small digital collection in the session fee; others sell images separately at the reveal. Always ask for a full breakdown before booking.
Most full-service boudoir sessions run 3-5 hours total including hair and makeup. The shooting portion is typically 1-2 hours with 3-5 outfit changes. Some studios also include a same-day image reveal; others schedule the reveal as a separate appointment.
Only if you want to be. Every boudoir session is entirely at your comfort level and that is communicated before and during your session. Most clients wear lingerie, robes, bodysuits, or an oversized shirt. Implied nude... where you are undraped but nothing explicit is shown... is common and tastefully done. Fully clothed options are also completely valid. A good photographer never pushes you beyond your comfort zone.
Completely normal. Almost every woman who books a boudoir session is nervous beforehand. The photographers on this directory have guided hundreds of nervous, first-time clients through the experience. You will not be expected to know how to pose, how to model, or how to be comfortable in front of a camera. That is the photographer's job. Yours is to show up.
Look for a photographer who specializes exclusively in boudoir (not a generalist), has a consistent portfolio showing work across diverse body types, and whose Q&A answers feel authentic and aligned with how you want to feel during your session. Read their Q&A carefully... it tells you more than any marketing copy. Trust your instincts. The right fit will feel obvious.
Most full-service studios have a client closet, so you do not need to bring everything yourself. That said, most women bring 2-4 of their own pieces... lingerie they love, a robe, a partner's shirt, meaningful jewelry. Bring heels if you have them and are comfortable in them. Wear loose clothing and avoid tight waistbands on the day of your session. Bring snacks and water. Bring an open mind.
